PSHE and RSE

The primary PSHE (Personal, Social, Health and Economic) and RSE (Relationships and Sex Education) curriculum is important because it helps children develop the knowledge, skills, and understanding they need to stay safe, healthy, and prepared for life. It supports aspects of learning linked to cognitive development by building self-awareness, emotional understanding, and decision-making skills. PSHE and RSE teach children how to form positive relationships, recognise and manage emotions, respect differences, and understand appropriate boundaries. This includes health, wellbeing, safety, and an age-appropriate understanding of how people grow and change. For parents, reinforcing these topics at home through open conversations, reassurance, and modelling respectful behaviour helps children apply their learning in real life and supports their confidence, safety, and overall wellbeing.

At Staverton Primary School we use Kapow to deliver:

  • RSE: Relationships and Sex Education (sometimes also referred to as RSHE - Relationships, Sex, and Health Education).
  • PSHE: Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education

Kapow's Primary RSE and PHE curriculum provides a comprehensive, spiral approach tailored for mixed-age classes, ensuring key concepts are built upon progressively.  It covers statutory Relationships Education, Health Education, and essential PSHE topics (citizenship, online safety) through flexible, "Cycle A/B" planning that allows for deep learning, with only two specific Year 6 lessons on reproduction available for parent withdrawal.

Please find further details for Cycle A and Cycle B here:

In addition to using Kapow, we also invite various outside speakers, professionals and agencies to come into school to deliver assemblies and age-appropriate workshops on a whole variety of topics. Some examples include:

  • Tara, our PCSO, visits every class to talk to the children about the Blue Butterfly Project
  • Our Mental Health Support Teams provide 1:1 support for children, specific class workshops for children, parents and staff and whole school assemblies
  • Simon Aston, an online safety and wellbeing officer who works with schools, social workers, parents, various Police forces and young people across Northamptonshire, talks in an age-appropriate way to every class in our school and provides both parent and staff training
